Coping with the Stress of Moving Home and Childrens Concerns

March 19th, 2009
Jason Hill asked:

Moving house can be an emotional experience for adults, so imagine how much more unsettling it can be for children who don’t really understand what’s going on.

There are many things to consider when relocating, none more important than the impact of moving on your children.

REMAIN POSITIVE:

The secret is to remain positive.

Most often the reason for moving is a happy one, such as a new home or job promotion, which generates excitement and compensates for the inconvenience of packing up and relocating.

However if the move is associated with an unhappy event it can be hard to keep a positive attitude in front of the children.

Children feed off the emotions of their parents.

If you are not happy the chances are they are not happy either and will need more reassurance and attention to ensure the move is a positive experience for all of you.

TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN:

Explain to your children what’s happening, why you are moving, where you are moving to and what they can do to help so that they feel a part of what’s happening.

Listen to them.

Let them express how they are feeling, and empathise with them, even if some of their feelings are negative.

It is only natural they will be concerned, leaving familiar surroundings and friends.

Leaving the known for the unknown can be pretty scary.

Most importantly be honest with your children.

Reassure them that they are an important part of the family, and can help make the move a positive family experience.

TEARS AND TANTRUMS:

Children express their anxiety in a number of ways.

Tears and tantrums are the most common. If your children have moved before, and the experience was not a happy one, they may show signs of depression, withdrawn behaviour, or signs of aggression such as tantrums.

Once again, the answer is lots of reassurance and a positive attitude.

Moving Checklist – Moving Day, Delivery Day and New Home Checklist

March 19th, 2009
Hilary Basile asked:

Keep moving pandemonium at a minimum by completing moving day tasks ahead of time. By doing so, you’ll be able to supervise the movers without worry or distraction. The following checklist will serve as a guideline of tasks to complete on moving day, delivery day and after arriving in your new home.

Moving Day Double check closets, drawers and shelves to make sure they are empty. Check rooms, attic, garage and yard to make sure nothing is left behind. Carry important documents, currency and jewelry yourself, or use registered mail. Note all utility meter readings. Read your bill of lading and inventory carefully (provided by the moving company) before signing. Keep paperwork in a safe place. Turn off the water heater and lower the thermostat. Get the name of the driver of the moving truck and give him your contact information. Review directions to the new house. Have the final payment for the movers and tip money.
Delivery Day Check your belongings carefully and note any damaged items on the inventory paperwork. Prepare to pay the driver before your possessions are unloaded via cash, a certified check, or travelers checks, unless other arrangements have been made in advance. Supervise the unloading and unpacking.
New Home Renew your driver’s license, auto registration and tags. Shop around for new insurance policies, especially auto coverage. Revise your will and other legal papers to avoid longer probate and higher legal fees. Locate the hospitals, police stations, veterinarian and fire stations near your home. Change the locks on all doors in your new home.

Use this checklist as a guideline for tasks to complete on your moving day, delivery day and after arriving in your new home.

Tips on Packing and Moving to a New Home

March 19th, 2009
Sophie McKinley asked:

If you are looking for ways to be organized and your are on your way on moving to a new home, try these easy steps to eliminate the hassle from your moving experience. These useful tips will help you be organized when packing your things.

1. List

There is no better way to start being organized than making a list. This is something even students or a regular house wife could do to easily see things accomplished or still undone. Make a list of all the things you need to take with you using your pen and paper or your computer for reference. Start from the most essential ones. Like the simple sorting styles done in most offices or libraries, label your boxes with the stuffs you’re going fill it with. Categorize your labeling style by naming boxes for the kitchen, bedroom, and so on. Through this simple step, you would have an overview of the things you already packed and those left unpacked.

2. Schedule

Set your time and packing needs accordingly. Make an estimation of your available time in each day for packing your things. Assign tasks within your ideal time to keep things on track.

3. Resources

You should find certain sources for your needed supplies. Be ready with lots of boxes and pick those that are durable. To go along with your boxes, be ready with packaging tapes and marking pens as well. Don’t buy everything you need, look for old newspapers to be used as wraps for your vases and plates. Some use bubble wraps to add more protection for their things. Moving companies provide boxes of all sizes and bubble wraps for your needs.

4. Labels and Colors

If you are looking for an even more organized type of sorting, try labeling and coloring your boxes. Color- coordinating the boxes would add more convenience for your part. For example, your yellow boxes are for your kitchen; the green boxes are for your bedroom, etc. This is to make it easier to move boxes accordingly. This eliminates the hassle of peeking into the boxes because you forgot which ones will go where. You can use stickers or a piece of colored paper to place on the boxes.

5. Contacts and Transportation

Look for reliable Moving companies and research on their available services. Search within your city like New Jersey Movers or Brooklyn Movers. Transact whatever is needed by the company. Provide important details and specifications such as your other needs for extra supplies. Most moving companies could deliver the boxes ahead of the expected day of your move.

This is like packing your life for a new home. You need to plan things ahead of time for you to have a fresh start in this kind of experience in your life. Good luck with your new home and I hope these simple tips would help you get started for your new life.
