Moving And Relocating Tips For The Homeowner

May 17th, 2011

When you are about to move across the city, state or even country, there are a lot of things you need to deal with and organize, and unless you know what you are doing, you might end up wasting lots of time, money and patience in the process. So here are some tips that will help you get the move underway in the best way possible.

First of all, you need to mark your boxes with the content, so if you have statues, vases and other fragile objects in there, you should mark the box accordingly. You should also add ‘Fragile’ to the box, so the movers know to handle them with extra care. Also you need to mark each box with the appropriate room name, so you will know where each box should be unloaded at the destination. Some boxes will go in the kitchen, others in the bedroom, bathroom or living room. Proper labeling will ensure that when the time for unpacking comes, you will make a fast and great job of putting everything in this proper place.

The furniture items should be adequately protected with padding, blankets or other fabrics for proper cushioning. If you have larger items, you should disassemble them so they fit in the relevant boxes. Also this will allow you to save that needed space.

Depending on how much money you have available for your moving you might either hire a full mover company who will do everything from packing to transporting your belongings, or hire a truck rental. In this case you will be driving (or another family member), so you will save some money in the process. However you need to get quotes from various companies so you know which one to go with. Also you have to read all the documents (including the small print) so you don’t end up paying more than you’ve initially agreed upon. And speaking of payment, you need to know what type of payment they accept. They might take various credit cards, checks and nowadays some even take PayPal, especially if you arrange the rental truck over the internet.

Before hiring the mover company, make sure to check with the Better Business Bureau that the chosen company is a good, reputable one, so they will handle your things with care and the truck you will rent from them is in good quality. And speaking of prices, try to move during off-season times, as this is when prices are lower. People mostly move during summer, so the moving companies will charge you higher prices for their services during peak seasons.

Moving Tips – Relocating and Moving For a New Job

May 17th, 2011

Relocating for a new job can be both an exciting and stressful experience. While the new job may be the dream job you’ve been working toward, the prospect of relocating in a short period of time may dampen your spirits. The farther away from “home” you have to relocate for a new job, the more concerns may arise. To minimize the stress of starting a new job in a new city far from home, follow these helpful tips for a worry-free relocation.

Downsizing Or Upsizing & Hiring A Moving Company

There are several factors to consider when deciding to relocate for a new job. Most importantly, what does your family need? If you live alone, an apartment or condo may suffice. If you have three children, two dogs and a cat, a single-family home with a large backyard may be a must.

Next, consider your budget. Home prices vary drastically from city to city and there are many factors that affect price including location, amenities, and the condition of the homes. In smaller cities, you may be able to stretch your buck and get more house than you thought possible. In bigger cities where real estate is in high demand, you may be forced to pay a premium to downsize.

Whether by choice or necessity you decide to downsize, decide if you can part with some of your belongings by selling them, or if you’ll need to rent a storage facility near your new home. If you’re upsizing, make sure to work the cost of new furniture and personal effects into your budget.

Once you have found a new home, consider whether or not you should hire a moving company. While moving yourself will certainly save some money, if you have an ample budget, movers can make your life easier by packing, loading, driving, and unloading your belongings. If you do decide to hire a moving company, make sure they’re licensed and insured.

Buy Moving Kits, Moving Boxes, And Moving Supplies

While it may be tempting to bum boxes from a grocery store or use hand-me-downs from your friends’ previous moves, having proper moving and packing supplies can significantly reduce your stress level.

You can buy moving boxes and moving kits from your local moving company or from an online distributor, often at discounted prices. Do some research to find the moving supplies you need at the best price possible.

Moving kits can save you time and money. Depending on the size of your home and items being moved, many companies offer small, medium or large moving kits that contain several sizes of boxes. These moving kits may also include packing supplies such as air bubble cushioning wrap, packing paper, tape and permanent markers to clearly label the boxes.

It is important to buy moving boxes or moving kits that fit the items being moved. If you have a home office to move, buy moving boxes made of heavy-duty corrugated cardboard and spring for the air bubble cushioning wrap to protect your valuable computer and electronics. Likewise, you can buy moving boxes made especially for moving clothes in a wardrobe or for moving your heavy-duty kitchen appliances to protect them from being scratched.

Relocation Reimbursement Or Income Tax Write Off

Many companies understand that relocating for a new job can be a stressful experience, and most are willing to help out by reimbursing your relocation costs. The types of expenses typically reimbursed include the cost to buy moving boxes and moving kits and the cost to hire a mover.

Additional costs that are sometimes paid (or sometimes overlooked) include lost utility deposits or security deposits on an apartment, and establishment costs in the new state such as registering your vehicle and renting a temporary storage facility. Some companies will even go as far as putting you up in “corporate housing” for a short period of time to help you get established in the area while you house hunt.

If relocation reimbursement wasn’t discussed during the application process, it never hurts to ask! However, if your new employer is not willing to reimburse you for relocation expenses, you can write off your move on your next income taxes. Make sure to keep all of your receipts and check with your tax accountant for guidelines.

If relocating is part of the deal when it comes to accepting your new dream job, follow these tips to ensure a worry-free move. To make your move easier, evaluate your new housing needs, buy moving boxes and moving kits, and ask your new employer about reimbursement for your relocation expenses.

Moving Green – Your New Home

Finally, your move is almost over and you have arrived at your new house. Your movers are on their way and now you need to get ready to unpack and get settled in.

Before The Movers Arrive

Prior to the arrival of your moving company, you may want to give your new house a nice cleaning as this will be one of the few times when furniture is not in the way.

Walk through your new home to see if there was anything left behind by previous occupants that you wish to discard of. Look in the closets, attic, basement and other hidden areas of your home. You may have a lot of boxes that you will want to store temporarily, so clear up these areas as storing space.

Be sure that materials you come across in your cleaning process are recycled or reused if possible. Prior to the arrival of your movers is a good time to get acquainted with your local transfer station or recycling center, as you will need their services.

Before your movers arrive, you should give your new house a thorough cleaning by dusting windowsills and ledges, mopping and vacuuming floors, and wiping countertops. Make sure you use non-toxic and biodegradable products like simple green to clean with. You can also, of course, hire a cleaning service to come to your house and make it spotless before your moving company arrives.

After The Movers Arrive

When the movers have unloaded your household items off of the truck, it will be time to unpack and sort everything. If you did a good labeling job, relocate the boxes to the appropriate rooms and do the unpacking from each room. During the unpacking process, make a separate pile of all the recyclable materials, such as the moving boxes, or the packing paper used to protect your fragile items.

If your new home has enough storage space, try to keep the moving boxes in good condition by flattening them and keeping them for future use. Always remember that the more you can expand the lifecycle of a product like this, the less resources will be used to create a box in its place.
